Eating Solid Food Sooner After C-Section May Shorten Hospital Stay
WASHINGTON, DC -- Allowing new mothers to eat solid food within hours after a cesarean delivery appears to be safe and may allow them to leave the hospital one day earlier than average, according to
researchers at CHRISTUS St. Joseph Hospital in Houston, TX, as reported in the July issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology journal.
Traditionally, women who have cesareans have not been offered solid food until a full 48-72 hours after surgery in order to prevent bowel problems. Women in this study were offered solid food within 4
to 8 hours following their cesarean. In addition to finding the procedure safe, the researchers found that women were generally pleased with the prospect of eating earlier.
Although other studies have shown that women may tolerate eating solid food soon after cesarean, this is the first study demonstrating any effect on the duration of hospital stay. The researchers found that introducing solid food earlier after a cesarean decreased the average hospital stay by nearly 24 hours, allowing women to go home sooner as well as reducing the hospital bill. The national average
for hospital stays following cesarean was 3.7 days in 1999.
